If you are like me, you have numerous boxes full of photos, not all in the same place, and in their original paper envelopes from the drug store or photo center. Sometimes you look through them, especially if your child needs a baby photo for school. But most of the time, they sit neglected, unseen and unloved by you or anyone else. What is very sad to me is when I go to a junk store and see orphan photos. I sometimes purchase them to adopt so they don't end up in the trash. So why take up scrap booking as a hobby? Do it for your family - your children and your grandchildren, and most importantly, for yourself. If you are not married or do not have children, there might be a niece or nephew or cousins that will cherish the scrapbooks that you create.

The proverb says, "A picture is worth a thousand words." How true. A photo of a great grandmother that I never knew looks out to me with the wisdom of her years. I will not be able to hear her speak or tell her story, but I have that photograph of her lovingly looking towards whomever took that photo.

Still a daunting task? Yes, but here are some steps to take to get you going.

1. Find boxes that will hold many envelopes of photos. There are scrap booking vendors that sell very nice, photo-safe boxes, but shoe boxes might work in the interim.

2. Take 15-minutes a week, or more, and walk around your home and find where you have photos stashed. Start putting your photos in the boxes. I found photo envelopes in drawers, in storage, and in closets. I am proud to say that most of my photos are in one room!

3. Decide what kind of album you want to use, which includes what size. Albums come in 12 x 12, 8 1/2 x 11, 8 x 8, and 6 x 6. The albums do not have to be expensive - you can use a 3-ring binder that holds 8 1/2x 11 sheets. The plastic that holds the photos and your pages must be photo-safe. You need to put your photos in archival photo safe (acid, lignin and pvc free) protectors. I have wedding photos that have yellowed because I put them in the wrong type of album 28-years ago.

There are no rules in scrap booking, except to use acid-free and archival photo safe page protectors and albums and acid-free glue and adhesives.

Do you want to start at the beginning of your life and go forward? Do you want to pick out special events and start there? Do you want to start with your children? Do you want to start with the old family photos that are getting scratched and ruined floating around in those drawers? This is entirely up to you.

There are "scrappers" who make wonderful, complicated, cute, and very creative pages! If that is not you, no problem. Do what makes you comfortable. There are hundreds of scrap booking sites, magazines and books with tons of ideas. There are ready-made pages that you just glue in your photos. You don't have to use ALL your photos. Pick out the ones that mean the most to you and store the others in your photo-safe boxes or shoe boxes. But keep them safe. Just as you keep your treasured memories safe in your heart, keep your photos - your family history safe, too.
