Digital pictures enable a scrap booking enthusiast to reach new heights of creativity. No matter what your level of expertise or experience, creating an eye-catching and time-treasured scrapbook is now easier than ever. Here are some basic tips for incorporating digital photos into your scrapbook. If you haven't done so already, be sure to download a free imaging software program like Picassa. For the more experienced, Photoshop Elements 5.0 is a worthwhile investment.
1. Apply the "law of thirds" when you crop photos.
The law of thirds is something that artists use frequently to draw the attention to the subject in the most appealing way. Visualize the photo as separated into 3 equal sections, either horizontally or vertically. Aim to crop your photo such that the subject occupies either the bottom two-thirds of the frame or the outermost two-thirds.
2. Use borders and smooth the edges
Any photo looks more professional and "polished" when it is surrounded by an attractive, understated border. If the subject of the photo is a person or pet, consider using a border that is more detailed. If the subject is a nature scene, such as a sunset, a simple eighth-inch white or black border gives a stunning presentation. Avoid using borders or edges that are too busy, especially in photos of action shots.
3. Know your printer's settings
When you've applied all the edits and enhancements to your photos, the worst thing you can do is hit the print button immediately. Most color printers and their corresponding software drivers, allow for wonderful results-but you have to tell the printer what you want! Be sure to select the right kind of paper, and the right resolution for printing. A digital photo that looks great on your computer screen can quickly lose its charm if printed on plain paper at a low resolution. If your intention is to put the photos in an album, then by all means, invest in some high quality photo paper. Some color inkjet printer cartridges are even bundled with photo paper to make things easier on the pocketbook.

The art of scrap-booking has made an intensely long journey from its earliest roots. And no, those earliest roots were not of the Creative Memories variety. Family photos, along with a few mementos served as precious reminders of the bygone days. From the black and white photos of our parents parents, to the blurred and off-center images of our family gatherings over the years, the available technology has been truly amazing. Even now, as we have the availability to incorporate digital images into a scrap-booking masterpiece, it is awe inspiring to thing about the progression of our personal family history.
