I know it is the aim of all scrapbookers to produce layouts that they love! And really at the end of the day that is all that matters. But if you want your layouts to look like they were done by a profession so that they will be chosen for publication then I have a few ideas and tips that I think will aid you in that endeavour.

Of course the easiest way to achieve a layout that looks like it was done by a professional is to scraplift'. Scraplifting is o.k. as long as you give credit where it is due and acknowledge the designer you stole the idea from. (I highly recommend you check out the scrapjazz website for some great information on this topic and what I believe are some good rules on scraplifting. http://www.scrapjazz.com/topic s/Miscellaneous/Getting_Publis hed/193.php)

But how do you achieve your own layouts with that professional, finished look? My first suggestion is to go to classes and watching online tutorials on all the latest techniques. Keep educating yourself. This is the surest way to give your layouts the latest look. A lot of the magazines tend to showcase different techniques at different times. They call it, "What's hot." Designer's too tend to have phases they go through. For instance Doodling was a big popular craze for a while but now it is changing slightly to include embroidery. Embroidery is the latest trend technique'. So to achieve a layout that looks like it was done by a professional include some of the latest techniques.

It is very important though to keep your layouts somewhat simple. What do I mean by that? Well I suggest that you don't use too many techniques or too many embellishments. If you study the work of the designers you love you'll notice that their layouts have a single theme that they stick to or a single design element. For instance if they're using flowers to embellish their work they'll usually keep any other design elements in the same style. So a layout with flowers embellishing it may have a floral patterned paper or feminine swirly lines, perhaps stitched on the layout. What it won't do is try to combine stripes, poka dots, flowers, shells and stars. Don't get me wrong you can see some great layouts that combine patterned striped, floral and poka dot papers with a flower embellishment. But what you don't get is the shells and hearts and stars as well.

Designers tend to keep to a theme. So a beach layout won't tend to have flowers, stripes, dots and sparkles and bling on it. Until you have
