Scrapbooking is really popular nowadays, and rightly so! People want to preserve their memories in a permanent way instead of just throwing photos into a box or to the back of a drawer.

There are two main ways of creating a theme for your background:- color and topic. However, before you start to think about your background, you need to decide which items you are going to place onto the page.

Once you have decided on which photographs you want to use, you can make decisions about the background.

TOPIC

If your photographs are about a particular event, such as Christmas, a birthday, Hanukkah or a trip to the seaside, you might want to use this event as the theme of your page.

Remember that your photographs should be the most important and eye-catching thing on the page. Don't choose very bright or busy backgrounds that will detract from this. Your background papers are your supporting cast - the photos are the stars!

Choose backing papers that are paler or darker than your photographs so that they stand out. Lay them out where you want them. Now you can choose some smaller bits of backing paper that will act as smaller accent points. These scraps can be the background for stamped words, tickets, bits of confetti etc that you collected on the day you are celebrating.

If you have a really lovely backing paper that you want to use, but feel that it is too strongly colored and will detract from your photos, layer the photos up with some plain paper in between it and the backing paper. This will give it a border and stop it coming into direct contact with the brighter paper.

COLOR

Color is a great way to theme a back ground. If you have a photo of a day at the seaside, choose blues and creams, for a wedding, you will choose white plus the color of the bride's flowers.

If you have an everyday photo, pick out one color from it - it might be the color of a t-shirt, or of someone's eyes or a favorite toy.

If you have photos from a walk in the woods, you could choose autumn (fall) colors such are rich browns and rusty oranges.

When you have chosen one color, you will need to choose some sub-colors. Choose one or two that are just a few shades different from your main color, and one distinctly co-ordinating color. This will bring life to your page.

Whichever color you choose, take time to lay all your pieces out first. Add a few bright contrasting colors in the background, and make it interesting with some 'keepsake' pieces such as ribbons and buttons from the photo.

Remember that scrapbooking is meant to be fun, and don't agonize too much over your layouts. Just do it how YOU want it!
