The saying, ''A picture is worth a 1000 words'' is definitely true today. We capture images through film, digital cameras and even phones. Once captured we strive to find the best way to display the image to it's full extent. Some produce the images for cards, art for the walls, screen savers, to decorate a favorite mug or to personalize a calendar. One of the leading crafts today is Scrapbooking, the art of creating the stories of our lives with pictures and journals.

One technique used to enhance a picture is called Mosaics. It is the technique where you cut paper into small shapes and use those shapes as either a background to enhance the photo or to create a shape or subject. You can use scraps of paper, pieces of trimmed photos, memorabilia of an event, wallpaper, etc as long as it is flat, will not damage your photo and an adhesive will not show through it. This technique will add a spectacular dimension to your project.

To plan your page start by taking your main photograph and then either use pictures of the same landscape or event, coloured paper or items from the event such as wrapping paper, airline tickets, etc. to use for cutting into small triangular shards. Next choose co-ordinating coloured paper to mount your photo on. When choosing colours I always try to pick tones that are already in the picture. If it is a landscape I will match to the colour of the trees, if it is a person, I will choose a colour close to what they are wearing. This choice of colour has the effect of drawing you into the picture and not having the picture get lost in the background.

I generally work with a 12x12 page layout and use 2 co-ordinating colours and 1 background colour. For purposes of illustration the sequence of my matting is as follows:

Photo 4 x 6

Brown paper 4.25 x 6.25

Green paper 4.50 x 6.50

White paper 4.75 x 6.75

(Note: these measurements give you a 1/8th matte to each layer, you can adjust to your preference if you like a wider matte.)

White paper 6.75 x 8.75

Brown paper 7.00 x 9.00

Green paper 7.25 x 9.25

If you use black instead of the white as a background you achieve a stained glass effect

Crop your photo and adjust matte sizes as needed. Matt the photo onto the first section of colours as above, eg. Brown, green, white (Use colours that bring out your subject).

Lightly trace the outline your matted photograph in the centre of the 6.75 x 8.75 white paper.

Using the material that you have chosen for the shards, begin
