Matting is one of the basic techniques of scrapbooking. Matting simply means laying an image or piece of memorabilia on a piece of background card, which `frames' the item on the page. You can use almost anything for matting, as long as it is safe and acid free. Plain card stock is one of the best matting materials.
Begin with a simple project - matting a photo so it stands out from the background page. If you have a patterned background page, the photo may be lost in it if place it without matting. Matting provides and instant frame for your photo.
Look at the photo first. Chose a dominant color, or an accent color, for your card stock. Lay the photo on you card stock and decide how much of the card stock you want to show behind the photo. Then, using a paper trimmer, or a craft knife and ruler, cut out the mat from the card stock. You can also use decorated edge scissors to give your mat a nice deckle edged appearance.
Using double side tape, fix your photo to the matt. Two strips down the side should be sufficient. Lay two strips of double side tape on the back of the matt, peel and fix to the page. This is the most basic technique in matting. But matting also lends itself to many creative forms.
For example, you can cut your mat card stock into shapes on which to mount your photo. The shape of a house would be appropriate for a page dedicated to moving into a new house, animal shapes would be fun and cute for a child's birthday page, while simple flower, heart and leaf shapes would fit in almost anywhere.
If you prefer a more modern look, cut out a larger piece of mat (in a contrasting or toning color) and angle it behind the basic mat before you fix on your photo. You can mix plain and patterned card stock this way as well, or use metallic over plain. The results can be stunning.
Trimming your mat can be as simple as cutting round the edge with decorated edge scissors, or more complex. Punch small holes around the edge of the mat, and lace fibers through the holes. Edge your mat with strips of double sided tape, peel off the upper cover of the tape and sprinkle the exposed sticky side with fine glitter. Shake of the access and your mat will have a glitter frame for your photo.
You can also use double sided tape to edge your mat with ribbon or braid. Edge the mat with double sided tape as before, peel off the covering and press ribbon or braid down onto the exposed sticky tape.
Mats can `hang' from the page if you punch two holes in the top right and left hand corners and thread ribbon or string through. Affix the ends of the ribbon to the page with double sided tape.
Make card mats by double the amount of card stock and folding it over to make a card. Run a ruler along the folded edge to make it sharp and clean. Place you image on the outside and journal on the inside, or the other way round.
Using white matting card, cut out rectangles larger than your images and slightly round the corners. Draw or glue standard card icons - hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds - to the corners, and mount your photos. Fan out the card shapes on the page.
With a little skill and a lot of imagination, matting can be one of the best techniques in your scrapbooking repertoire.
