You can get gorgeous and professional effects with the use of heat-embossing techniques, and once you have the basic equipment, it is a very cost-effective way of adding sparkly, depth and interest to your scrap-booking pages.
EQUIPMENT
You will need embossing ink, ink pads, stamps, embossing powder, a small fine brush, and a heat gun made especially for embossing.
BASIC TECHNIQUE
First, choose what you want to emboss. This can be a part of a design, such as a letter or a flower, to highlight it, or it can be the edging of an embellishment.
You can emboss straight onto your scrapbook page, but I would recommend using small pieces of paper that can be embossed and glued onto the page later. This way you have the flexibility of moving them around the page to check the effect before gluing them in place, and it also allows for any mistakes that you might make.
Stamp the design onto your chosen paper. It is better if you don't choose a shiny paper, because the ink doesn't stick well to this. Try not to press too hard, or to rock the stamp, as this can lead to distortion.
Next, sprinkle your chosen embossing powder over the stamp. Try to use as little powder as is necessary to cover it, but enough so that it is fully covered over.
Tap the paper gently to ensure that all the stamp is covered, and tip any loose powder back into your pot.
Lastly, position your heat gun a few inches away from the powder and start to heat it up. As you heat the powder, you will see it begin to melt and go shiny. As soon as you see this happen, stop heating it.
TYPES OF POWDER
You can get powder in many different colors, mainly metallic. You can get them with additions of mica, to make them shiny, and in matte colors, too.
Clear powder can be used over items that are already colored, but would benefit from becoming 3D. Layer the powder on top and proceed as before.
INK PENS
If you want a more controlled approach to applying ink, so that you can draw freehand designs, or just to touch up existing designs, look for embossing ink pens, which will give you this flexibility.
Remember that the color of the ink will color the final embossed item, so choose with care.
WHAT CAN I EMBOSS?
You can emboss anything that won't be damaged by the application of heat. This means that you can emboss paper, card, fabric, metal, and any embellishment made of strong enough material.
Use colored embossing powder to change the color of your brads, eyelets, corners and fixings to extend the range of your supplies.
Use embossing pens to write messages on your pages and make them pop'.
Emboss commercially produced tags and toppers to make them individual to you.
Add glitter to fairy wings and highlights to lettering the list is endless!
TWO WARNINGS
1. Keep the heat gun pointed away from your face, and from anyone near you. Don't let children play with the gun.
2. Once you've started embossing you'll never look back! Gift tags, photos, ribbons and mounts will all be graced with a glittering garnish. Hooray!
