The new rage, "scrap booking", all I see is an old, worn out notebook, my mother had in a box of forgotten teen relics; stacked among the bell bottoms and jean vests from an era long gone. How wrong I was that first view. I had to see what all the rage was about. No way was I going to be left out of something so enlightening to everyone else! I started out by going to a few of the scrapbook meetings, but I still couldn't get over the money factor. Then it happened; I was shopping in a discount store, and there was the Isle of Glory, a whole section dedicated to stickers, design punches, paper of every style you could dream, and scissors to add scalloped edges. Now, this I could understand; not high dollar scrap paper; budget scrap paper. It suddenly made sense, this was not a mission of decor, but a craft, an expression of individuality. At that moment, I realized how scrap booking was going to change my life: scrap booking became the activity I bonded with my daughter over. I went crazy, buying every eight year old, self-proclaimed princess inspired sticker and paper. I can't tell you how exciting old pictures become, when you see them for the first time again through your child's eyes. A bad picture day fifteen years ago, is worth all the obnoxious comments my classmates gave me, when my daughter and I can spend an entire day laughing about it, and building a relationship that is so hard to find today. The world moves so fast, with each of us spending less and less time at home. For so long, I worried over what I could do to hold on to my baby a little longer; already she wanted to hide in her room, playing video games or watching movies with friends. I can't quite understand the allure of "Brats", (let's be honest, "Barbie" had much more class), and there isn't much communication in any of the other "cool" activities. My salvation for the continued cherished time with my child, was found in some scrap pieces of paper, that remind me of that flower child, long forgotten, seventy's notebook. I guess the great things do have a way of coming back.
