I have to admit that the price of a Cricut machine and cartridges seemed like a pretty big investment to me. Lucky for me, I received my Cricut as a gift from the scrapbook queen herself, my sister. She decided to get Cricut's newest version, Cricut Expressions, and gave me her "lil bug" and a cartridge to get me started. I didn't think I would use it that much but after tinkering with it for a week or two, I am hooked. I LOVE IT! I then decided to invest in some additional cartridges. I use them all the time.
This last Christmas we decided to buy each other the Sizzix Big Kick die cutting machine. I have bought several shape dies for it as well. I enjoy it a lot. I was thinking of buying a set of alphabet dies for it but when I started to do my research I realized that the Cricut is by far the best deal out there for fonts.
I looked at two different sets of alphabet dies for the Sizzix. One was a $49.99 set and the other was a $149.99 set. The only differences between the two sets besides a $100 in price, was that the more expensive set included 26 more dies, a smaller font size, 10 numbers and a handful of extra shapes.
Comparing the larger Sizzix set with a Cricut font cartridge which retails for $89.99. The Cricut offers almost 3 times as many extras, cuts in 11 different sizes versus Sizzix one size, has a smaller storage case and the price is $60 cheaper. Oh, and it has 6 creative features. Translation? You essentially get 6 additional font sets. You seea creative feature changes the way the font looks. For example, on the Cricut Printing Press font cartridge not only do you get the original font set you also get the following creative features that changes the look: character, tall, clip, framed, character shadow, and tall shadow. So the way I see it, I can spend $150 on one set of dies or spend less and get 7 sets of dies in one little cartridge. That's like $13 a set. Actually, since the Cricut cuts 11 different sizes, you could think of it as you getting 77 alphabet sets (7 alphabet styles x 11 sizes each). And that is like a little over $1 a set.
I like both my die cut machines but if I am looking for the best investment to make die cut letters, the Cricut is the best deal hands down!
