Scrapbooking is a popular hobby dedicated to preserving memories and doesn't require elaborate, expensive tools. All you need are a few simple basics to get started. I've compiled a list of just five, some of which you may already own.

First, you will need an album. Acid-free albums tend to be a bit more expensive, but will last longer. Page protectors will keep your pages' elements intact. Most albums come in either 8x11 or 12x12. Recently, the 8x8 size has become popular. Pick whatever size appeals most to you. Consider which type of binding would be easiest for you; ring-bound and post-bound are generally favored for their ease of adding/removing or reordering pages.

Second, you will need paper. Build a range of paper choices, starting with your favorite colors. Pick patterned papers you like, and select plain colored cardstock to coordinate. It may be helpful to use a color wheel to select complementary colors. Try paper packs or kits that come with matching papers and take the guesswork out of coordination.

Third, get a quality pair of scissors to use only for scrapbooking. Splurge for a pair with a handle that fits your hand comfortably. Use them only for cutting paper; don't use them for wire. Keep the blades clean and rust-free. When they begin to dull, don't cut sandpaper or aluminum foil as these "tricks" can actually dull the blade; take them to a professional for sharpening. Keeping this basic and very important tool in top shape will pay off in the long run.

Fourth, you will need adhesive, You may wish to consider a variety of adhesives for different mediums. Try them all and find what works best for you. There are the grade-school basics of Elmer's glue and glue sticks. A more sophisticated option would be an acid-free equivalent of a glue pen. Glue pens spread glue more thinly, without clumps like a glue stick. There are also adhesive runners, glue dots, and adhesive squares. Each has unique benefits or works well to adhere different mediums.

Finally, you will need writing instruments. Select a few pens in basic colors that will show up well on cardstock. Choose whatever thicknesses appeal to you. Experiment with specialty pens like metallic or glitter. Acid-free pens or markers, designed especially for scrapbooks will last the test of time. Aim to journal on every page, and do most of your journaling in your own handwriting. Though computer-generated text can look very polished, your own handwriting is so personal and will be treasured by future generations. As you look back later, you will appreciate the personal touch of your own handwriting, even if you consider it imperfect or sloppy.

Now that you have the five basics in place, you are ready to preserve your memories. All you need are some favorite photos and memories and you are on your way!
