When a friend of mine pulled out her scrapbooks at a get-together, I was impressed. They were beautiful. Each page was different. They all had fine details, with accents and embellishments beyond anything I had ever imagined going into a scrapbook. Could I make books as polished and beautiful as hers? I wondered.

I later asked her how to get started. She told me it had taken her years to accumulate her mounds of supplies and accessories, but getting started was easy. I admired her neatly organized scrap booking workspace as she pointed out the must-haves. With her help to start me off, I have run wild with this new hobby.

The first, and most obvious thing you thing you will need are photos. You may already have stacks of them stored away somewhere, but if you're like me, you're also continually taking more and more. It's a good idea to get organized. You may want to purchase some photo boxes with dividers. This will make it much easier to find what you are looking for. I use a digital camera. Its nice knowing I can delete the shots that don't turn out, and that there are no limitations to how many pictures I take. Not everyone is great at taking pictures, but if you are using a digital camera you can also edit them on your computer. A great shot will really make your pages come alive.

The next essential item you will need, is a variety of paper. The easiest way to buy it is in a slab, or scrap-stack. You will get the most for your money and you'll have coordinating colors to do your pages with. Often times the slabs come with bonus stickers and frames as well. If you'd rather not buy a slab of paper, you can go to a craft store and pick out your paper individually, sheet by sheet. This is fun if you have a lot of time, and extra money, but I wouldn't suggest doing this for every page.

Another essential item is a paper cutter. You will probably want one that is twelve by twelve inches so that you can cut your paper as well as pictures and other things. A good pair of scissors is also a must have in your toolbox.

You will also need some adhesives. The most common and least expensive is the glue stick. I like to buy the extra large craft stick glue. That way, I don't have to keep going through the little glue sticks. There are other choices when it comes to adhesives such as double stick tape, but a good glue stick or two is really all you need to get you started.

You may consider some organizers to keep all of your stuff easily accessible. This was key for me when I got started. It's hard to stay motivated when all of your supplies are stuffed in the closet.

Embellishments are what add the extra pizazz to your pages. But be careful, these items can be pricey. Look for stickers, ribbon, accent frames, and other items in unexpected places to save some money. Discount stores often have such items for only a dollar compared to four or five at the craft or specialty scrapbook store. Choose your embellishments carefully, and don't worry about buying too many at once.

Like my friend told me, it takes time to accumulate things for this hobby. Just slowly work your way into it, and before you know it you'll love this craft just as much as the rest of us scrappers.
