Embellishments are one of the most expensive ongoing items in scrapbooking. While tools like fancy edging scissors and rubber stamps can be used for many years, packets of embellishments are quickly used up and often contain items that don't get used at all.
The best way to get embellishments for your scrapbook pages is to make your own. That way you control the shape, size and design, and there is no waste.
Tags make lovely embellishments, and by printing and cutting out your own tag shapes, or buying cheap packets of luggage labels, you can make great unique tags to embellish your pages.
If you use rubber stamps and stamp pads, you can start right away creating beautiful tags. Rub a brown ink pad round the edges of a plain luggage tag to `age' it, and stamp a suitable motif on the tag with a rubber stamp and brown ink. You will have a great vintage tag.
If you want to give the tags some bling, sprinkle gold embossing poweder over the stamp mark while it is still wet. Shake off the surplus onto a piece of paper and return to the container, then hit the remaining powder with some heat (a small hair dryer works well if you don't have a heat tool). The embossed image will leap out and give your tag a very special look.
Tags can also be decorated with stick on letters and images, and if you have a printer attached to your computer, you can print out your own. Tags with quotes on them look great, so collect your favorite quotes from the Internet and print them out on paper that tones or contrasts with your tags. Cut out a quote and stick it on the tag.
Decorate your tags with fibers, but don't buy the expensive ones at the scrapbooking store. Ask your knitting and sewing friends to pass on their leftover yarn and embroidery cotton to you, or use your own. To make a fiber embellishment for a tag, mix two or three fibers cut to the same length, and thread them through the hole at the top of the tag. Use a hole punch to make holes in your own tags. Tie the fibers and your tags will look really special.
You can also use your found fibers directly onto the page. To lay fibers on your page, stick a length of double sided tape where you want the fibers to go. Then lay the fibers on top of the tape and they will stay put.
A big canvas needle will help you sew fibers to a page. Thread the needle with the fibers you want to use and sew simple stitches to the page, or you can try fancy embroidery stitches. Be very careful not to tear the page - it
