I've discovered a great way to spend a day out with the kids and to create memories that will last a life time.

Lately I've gotten into scrap-booking. I was a little worried because I've heard talk about how expensive it can be but I'm a frugal person and will usually find the cheapest way possible to get something done.

Here's what a scrap-booking day for me and my children means to us:

First off, I pack us up a completely healthy picnic lunch. Or if I want to splurge we hit the grocery store and grab a bunch of fresh fruit to take with us.

We make a quick stop at the dollar store and I'm not sure if they are available to all of you but here they sell those little instant cameras for $2.50 each. I get one for each of my children and one for myself.

I'm lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful spots in the world. I'm on the northwest coast of BC, Canada. The ocean is a 20 minute drive from my house and one of the best fishing rivers in North America is only a 10 minute walk from my front door. We are surrounded by forests and it really is absolutely beautiful during all seasons. Our town was planned before it was built and it's got wonderful scenic parks scattered throughout. Often the hardest part of our day is deciding where to go for our picnic. I've taken to letting the kids pick the destination alternately.

Anyways, we go out for our picnic and we each use up all 12 pictures on the camera. Then we drop the cameras off at the one hour photo-shop. This is probably the most expensive part of the day. Sometimes when I'm strapped for cash, I just drop them off at our grocery store and we do the scrap-booking part in a couple of weeks when they come back.

So, while we are waiting for the pictures to be developed, we hit our local thrift store and for 5 cents a piece we each pick up one of those cardboard baby books that only has a few pages in it. Then we go and pick up the pictures.

I've learned to pick up stickers and whatnot whenever I have a few extra bucks in my hand and I now have quite the collection going.

The kids and I then spend a couple hours scrap-booking away. They absolutely love it. It's THEIR pictures, THEIR memories. I've got a whole shelf on my bookcase reserved for our outing scrapbooks. I can't wait until my children have children of their own.. that's when I'm going to pass the books along to them for them to share the memories of growing up with their own children.
