Journaling is the most important part of preserving your memories. The importance does not necessarily lie specifically in the act itself, but in the legacy left to those who will want to know the story behind the photos in the scrapbook. The story that should be told is not only in the words that complement and frame each photo, but in the manner the journaling is done. Journaling my be personal notes, recollection of events, stories taken down of the people in the photos, or simply dates, names and places that are relevant to the photos.
Whether the journaling is handwritten, computer printed, or cut and pasted to the pages from adornments and embellishments, if the words exist, the legacy continues.
I have personally witnessed the telling of two stories that justify the time that can be spent on journaling and the affect the lack of such action has. From the two stories that follow, I learned that some journaling, handwritten or otherwise, is better than none at all.
The first story I heard was a recollection of the daughter of a woman who died from breast cancer. When her mother died, she and her father went through personal items and found that amongst everything, while pictures were preserved and keepsakes stored safely, her mother had not written one single item by hand. It truly dismayed this woman that she did not have her mother's hand writing to cherish.
The second story is of a woman who, on a garage sale expedition, found a box full of old photos. They looked like they had been taken in the early 1900's. Many were family photos and a few individuals. The photos themselves were in good shape. However, upon inquiring the host about the photos, the response was that while they thought the people in the photos might be family, they had no way of knowing. So while the photos were nice to look at, they no longer had any emotional value as the story was not written.
The most basic of journaling efforts by the individuals who took the photos would have completely changed both of the above scenarios, bringing a legacy of time to families and loved ones.
While not everyone wants to write their entire personal story or the list details of events in any given set of photos, at the very least, a date and documentation of the people present in the photo should be taken down. Taking the time to preserve this information can make all the difference in leaving the legacy that is intended.
By taking the time to journal, the author of the photos can truly preserve the story that is behind each photo. Without journaling, the identities of family and close friends may be lost forever.
