Most people scrapbook the happiest times in their lives. They are moments they never want to forget, and they are likely the first objects they would grab if their house was burning down. But sometimes an artist needs to look inward and create something personal. Creating your own wish book for yourself can be wonderful way to explore your life and your goals. It was much more personal than the average scrapbook you whip out at parties of your vacation to Disney World.

A wish book doesn't just document your life, it helps you look forward to the future. When I looked at my wish book I created 7 years ago, I noticed I had really made my wishes a reality. Recently, a friend of mine was in a chaotic place in her life, and I mentioned my wish book. She immediately asked, "Where did you get it? How did you do it?"

First, buy a journal, scrapbook or a photo album that you can tape, glue, or stick articles, photos, or anything that grabs your attention. Make sure it is appealing so you will return to it again and again. You will want to pick up this book, flip through it and enjoy its existence.

Then split the pages into six different parts.

Your Relationships:

What do you want out of your friendships? How do you want to connect to your spouse? What kind of parent do you want to be? Is there a relationship you wish to revisit and improve? How we relate to each other is a huge part of our lives.

Your Body:

Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to be less self-conscious? Maybe you just want a complete fashion makeover. This section allows you to address your health including your mental, physical and spiritual well-being. You only have one body, and what do you wish that body could do?

Your Finances:

Sure, we all wish that money would just float our way, but sometimes you really need to focus on your cash flow. How is your career going? Is it the one you really wanted? Do you want to make changes? Do you want to start an investment club? Maybe you just want to be able to afford that one thing you never thought you could. Or maybe you want to make enough money that you can give a chunk of it away.

Your Home:

Maybe you live in a trailer, or a condo. Maybe it's a McMansion, but you hate the color of your bedroom. What is your ideal home? How is it decorated? What does it smell like? What do you see from the kitchen window? Is it in a city or do you live in a farmhouse?

Your Travels:

Vacations, living in another country or just the idea of going to a place to hide from everything else says a lot about who we are. Where do you want to go? Maybe it's a cabin in the woods. A Disney vacation with your kids would be nice too. Perhaps you want to go to Kenya and see what life is like there.

Other Adventures:

What do you want out of life that doesn't fit in these categories? When I started my wish book, I didn't have a husband, a house or children. When I look at my book from 7 years ago, the very idea of a child was an adventure that seemed so far from where I actually was. Now I am living that adventure. Where do you see yourself in 10, 15, or 25 years from now?

This kind of journal forces you to address all parts of your life, and focus on what you want to change or improve. The funny thing about my wish book is that I never actually wrote in it. I went through magazines and found words, images and little quotes that said what I wanted to say. It is a book made up of small collages of who I am and who I want to be. It looks forward to my future and it has taught me so much about myself.
