Chalk can be an easy and inexpensive way to dress up your scrapbooking pages.
Rub chalk onto the edges of your paper to add more color and dimension. Darker colored chalk such as black or brown can be used to add an aged and antiqued look to your paper by rubbing it over the edges of your paper or over the entire surface. This is especially effective if you're using a textured cardstock or paper as it will accentuate the texture of the paper.
Chalk can magnify a distressed look as well. Crumple up a piece of paper and then flatten it back out. Rub some chalk lightly over the surface of the paper to accentuate the newly created ridges.
Chalk can also be used to color in stamped or drawn images much like you would use crayons. It creates a very nice, muted effect.
One of my favorite things to do with chalk is to accentuate words or parts of my journaling. Simply rub chalk over selected words in your journaling to make them "pop out". For example, I created a page about my toddler's tantrum behavior. Within the journaling I highlighted some of his tantrum quotes with red chalk. It really helped get across the emotion I was trying to portray. You could also use this technique with other elements on your page. If you have a background paper with a repeated image on it, choose one of the images and highlight it with chalk to make it stand out and become a more prominent part of your layout.
Chalk can even be useful if you can't find quite the right shade of coordinating paper. When trying to coordinate with a difficult shade of blue-green patterned paper I had purchased, I found that I didn't have the right color of cardstock. I simply took a piece of light blue paper and then lightly dusted it with green and blue chalk until it reached a shade that coordinated perfectly.
You can use different applicators depending on where you want to use your chalk. For smaller areas use a Q tip or most chalks come with a small applicator that resembles an eye shadow applicator. If you're applying chalk to larger areas a cotton ball is an excellent tool. Always start with a light dusting of chalk. You can always add more later to strengthen the color. I would strongly suggest practicing on a scrap piece of paper before putting chalk on your layout so that you can master the technique needed for each different application.
