Handmade memory books/scrapbooks are a wonderful, creative, and inexpensive way, to create something entirely from scratch. They also make wonderful gifts for grandparents, parents, friends, other family, or just yourself.
Each book takes approximately 30 minutes to an hour to complete.
The materials you will need include the following:
- brown paper that is the color of a paper bag (you can buy a very large roll of packing paper at Office Max for just a few dollars that works wonderfully)
- a long white candlestick
- iron (household will work just fine)
- scissors
- ruler
- pencil
Now, here are the steps you will take in making your memory book/scrapbook
1. Take your packing paper and roll out until you have about 4 or 5 feet of paper.
Measure the paper length wise, approximately 10 inches down the roll (or however long you choose). Mark your spot, and draw a line across the paper until you reach the end (about 4 or 5 feet long). With your scissors, cut down that line until you have one long single sheet of paper.
2. Fold the paper accordion style across the entire sheet to create a 'book'. (I like to make my pages approximately 8 inches across). Make sure that the creases are very visible and tight.
3. Color the entire sheet of packing paper with the white candlestick (front and back). When this is complete, unfold the book.
4. Now, starting at one end of the sheet, crumple up the entire sheet as if you were going to throw it in the garbage. Un-crinkle it and repeat starting at the other end. Make sure that the entire sheet is very wrinkly. Un-crinkle it again and fold the book back up.
5. Get a sheet of regular computer typing paper and lay on top of the book. On low-medium heat take your iron and iron around the entire page. Repeat this process for each page (front and back) using the computer paper between the book and the iron.
*The iron melts the wax to give it a more vintage and older look, if you do not use the typing paper directly underneath the iron, the melted wax will ruin your iron.*
6. Let the book sit and dry. It will take approximately 5-10 minutes to be completely dry.
Now, your book is finished. The 'crumpling', coloring, and ironing is to give your book an 'old' look. Make sure you buy a strong glue that is acid free to hold all pictures or other things you place inside your book down. I find it more special and fun to make a theme for each book. Themes you could consider are baby, birthday, outings, vacation, family, friends, etc. They make wonderful heartfelt gifts as well as personal books to cherish memories.
I learned how to make this from an assignment I was given in art class my senior year of high school. It has now become one of my favorite projects and I make them all the time.
