Are you ever stuck for a perfect phrase for your scrapbooking title? Maybe you just stick with the date or the seasons like summer or fall. Some scrapbookers title every page with the name of the subject in the photograph. It might be a place, like Disney World or the beach, or it could be a person's name like Susan or Grandpa. Being creative with scrapbooking titles adds interest to a page layout just like embellishments and borders. Music, movies and television can offer inspiration and ideas for your scrapbooking titles that will capture the mood and theme of your next page layout.

Scrapbooking Titles in Music

Music inspires us all. How often have you heard a song on the radio and it immediately brings back a memory from years ago. It might be a song that was playing when you first dated your husband, or maybe it's a song from your high school days that reminds you of your senior year. Songs have the ability to spark memories in all of us.

For your next page layout, look to music for your inspiration. Song titles are great sources for scrapbooking page titles. Quoting a single song title may be all you need to say to start singing that song in your head. Some examples of song titles that could be used as scrapbooking page titles are "Simply Irresistible," "Brown-eyed Girl," and "You Are My sunshine." Keep a list of possible song titles that would work well on your scrapbooking projects.

Sometimes it's the lyrics themselves that inspire us. You might want to use more than just the title. A lyric like, "These are the moments and I could not ask for more," will add just the right mood to a treasured photograph.

To create a mosaic is to piece together odd shaped materials into either a pattern or picture, and it has been around as an art form for centuries. Not only do people use mosaic patterns in ancient art, it is used modernly to spruce up glass or furniture and gives the piece a very unique and distorted look that is a treat to the eyes when light hits it the right way. Even now, mosaics are mostly created by odd shaped stones, colored glass or mirrors, but scrapbookers can get the same look without digging deep into their pockets or giving their albums the weight of a pile of bricks.

Creating mosaics in your scrapbooking endeavors not only looks wonderful, but it also pays an important part in attracting your eye to the photograph that lies within the mosaics walls. Creating these unique borders gets rid of a lot of scrap you may have around, whether it be pieces of patterned paper, assorted colored card or paper, or other materials that you have been saving but not quite knowing what for. If you are the type to just throw out your scraps, you may want to reconsider your doings after you give this a read.

Let's start with the basic mosaic border. The first thing you are going to do is pick a spot for your photo. Draw around the photo lightly with a pencil, and than draw the thickness of the border that you would like around the first box you drew. The inner line will be a guide that tells you where the photos boundaries are, so when creating the mosaic you must do your best not to touch this line. Otherwise, you are going to have a photo that sits on part of the mosaic, and it will look messy. If you so please, you may paste the photograph down beforehand and cover a bit of the sides with the mosaic - but keep in mind that you won't be able to remove the photo again, as the mosaic will be holding it down.

Take whichever scrap you like and cut it into your desired shapes. You could try using odd shapes, or you could go for something more conservative like triangles or different sized squares. Either way, any shape will work as long as they can interlock' with each other. Once you have cut the shapes out, start to place them within the space of the two lines, keeping in mind that it is much easier for a beginner to place the shapes without gluing, and when you are content with the result you can glue them down.

Pictures may mean a lot right after you take them, but in a few years, you'll be asking yourself, "Where was that?" "Who is that?" "Why on earth did I take that?" To prevent such confusion, take the time to do some journaling as well as dressing up your photos with fun backgrounds and visuals. Here are few tips for using journaling as both a record keeping tool and a way to add interests to your scrapbook.

1. Make sure to include the basics.

Remember the five "w's"? Who, what, where, why, when? Those five little words are the questions a good reporter answers in even the most basic of articles. Make sure your journaling includes a name, location, date, and brief description for each photo or set of photos.

2. Keep track of who's who.

Try to name all the people in the photo in a logical order, and explain that in your caption (i.e. "left to right" or "top to bottom"). Remember, this scrapbook may be handed down to later generations. Even though you have no trouble telling your kids apart, your grad kids will appreciate being able to distinguish their mom from their aunt.

3. Include the most accurate date you can.

Don't fret about dates too much! If you can't get a day and month, at least add something like "summer 2006". It's easy to get stuck on a project when you get hung up on details and perfection. Let the information you have be good enough and go on; if you later remember the exact date, you can write it in.

4. Let everyone have their say.

Include a page where all the members of your family can write their thoughts about a photo or collection. I understand that you probably want to do most of the journaling yourself (either by hand or on the computer) in order to ensure a neat, uniform look. However, letting members of your family add their thoughts in their own writing will give the scrap book a truly personal quality that all will appreciate later. Adding these little notes on a designated sheet of paper will keep the actual photo displays looking professional.

5. Don't forget feelings and impressions.

Looking at a picture only tells one so much. Explain why the people in the photo are laughing or frowning by summarizing the situation. Add descriptions of things like temperature and sound. Years later, you may not remember the cries of the seagulls or the chill of the ocean breeze, so adding such impressions next to your photo will help preserve the experience.

6. Plan ahead!

If you are journaling by hand, practice writing your caption or note on scrap paper first. That way, you can change your layout or edit your note in order to make sure everything fits on the page. You don't want to run out of room halfway through a sentence.

7. Work when in a clear, calm state of mind.

It can be hard to put a project down when you're "on a roll," but a tired mind makes for sloppy work. If you are writing in ink, those little mistakes will be a pain to correct, and an annoyance to look at. You will have to choose between covering your errors with creatively chosen paper accents and living with the spelling/grammar errors or poorly written words. I personally would never journal by hand because of my error-prone nature. However, even the most detail-oriented scrapbooker can make mistakes when tired.

Getting paid to scrapbook isn't as easy as people think. It's true that a scrapbooking business doesn't require as much capital funds as other Internet businesses. But that doesn't mean you'll immediately have money pouring in. If you wish for your scrapbooking home based business to work, you need to think of it just like any other Internet business and devote to it a lot of your time and effort.

5 Ways to Get Paid to Scrapbook
If you don't possess ALL of the following characteristics then it's very unlikely that you're suited to successfully run a scrapbooking home based business or even to just get paid to scrapbook.

Imagination / Creativity - Although you can make templates of your designs, some or many of them will soon run out of favor with your clients. These designs will have to be "retired" and replaced with something new, and herein lie the most important question: are you sure you can consistently create new, attractive, and unique designs for your business?

I recently reorganized by supplies, after finishing my latest album. I find that when I am on a streak of working on a lot of projects in a row, my supplies become a scattered mess. The first thing I did was to remove everything from my two main cabinets. I then moved to my plastic drawers. Each type of supply needed its own method of organization. The big surprise was how many supplies I had that I had forgotten about. Keeping thing well organized can help you use the supplies you have.

Paper

I divide my paper into solids and patterned paper. I use plastic, vertical paper holders to store my paper. Cardboard magazine holder would work, or shelves. I find that the vertical holders store the most paper, and allow me to quickly look through what I have. By dividing the solid paper by color, I can quickly look for the right shade to match any photos I have chosen. I sort the patterned paper by color and theme. My patterned papers are grouped by color, while others are grouped by theme. I try and keep my themed patterned paper separate, and sort it alphabetically. This way, when I am looking for baseball themed paper, it is easier to find.

Brads and other small embellishments

Keeping these in labeled containers is a huge help. I use a custom container that has small plastic boxes. Each box is labeled with the color of the brad, or a description of what it is. Again, the key is labeling the items and keeping them where you can easily see what you have. Any divided container, like a tackle box will help. Or, you can use a spice rack with small bottles or containers like baby food jars.

Stickers

I own a sticker organizer and try and keep them organized by theme. Anything that makes finding what you want easier will make your project more enjoyable.

My plastic drawers hold my cutting supplies, stamps and stamp pads, and adhesives. By assigning each category its own drawers makes finding what I need much easier.

One other major issue I have is that I own several different brands of page protectors and extension posts. I have tried labeling them and keeping the posts with their matching pages; it is not working thus far! My new method is going to be buying one brand, and one brand only!

I think my favorite for organizing technique is using a plastic folder to pull out supplies for certain projects. When I am doing a themed album, say for our summer trip to the beach, I pull out everything I have to match that theme and put it in the folder. You could use a shoebox or other small container. This way, once you get your photos ready, you have all of your creative supplies at the ready. I have one that is on going for our Cedar Point album. I add to this album after every season, so I just keep all of my amusement park stickers and papers together for quick use.

In my almost 10 years of scrapbooking, I have used many different types of organizational tools. The main thing is to find what works for your and your space, keeping in mind the more organized you are the more effectively you will utilize all of the wonderful materials that you have collected.

The absolute joy of scrap booking is that it is the story of your life and you get to tell it in your way. 3.. Scrap Your pets In our lifetimes we have very special family members. My adult children still remember cats that we have had and really enjoy looking back at the pictures of them. Taking pictures of your animals are so rewarding. The pages that we have created of our best always bring a smile or two.

4. Document where you have lived. The houses or places where you have lived are an important part of your life, so make sure to include them too. I have been remolding my house and doing some major projects, so I have included the story of how it happened and it has been great fun. You can also scrap your gardens. Tell of the story of the houses or places you lived. It makes for great memories.

5. Do make grandchildren scrapbooks. One of my biggest joys is making all 5 of my grandchildren their one scrapbooks. It's one of the first things they want to see when they visit. As they grow I add pictures and all kinds of captions to them. It is a perfect way for us to spend special time together. When they are married, I will give each one of them their own book. Because I want to keep memories of them with me, I make double copies of the pictures.

Scrapbooking with photographs has been around since photos became available to ordinary people. Old scrapbooks tended to have photos mounted with photomount corners and perhaps notations of who was in a photo or where and when it was taken. Modern scrapbooking has evolved into creating attractive displays of photos, text and memorabilia. As of August, 2006, the commercial scrapbooking industry celebrated 25 years of existence, as started by Marielen (pronounced "Mary Ellen") W. Christensen of Keeping Memories Alive, the world's first scrapbooking store (which then had a different name), headquartered in Spanish Fork, Utah, USA, in 1981.

Scrapbooking as an actual industry has its roots in 1976, when Christensen began designing creative pages for her family's photo memories. She inserted her memory pages into a new product called sheet protectors and placed them inside 3-ring binders. By 1980, she had assembled over fifty volumes of family memories, and was invited that year to display her albums and demonstrate her concept at the World Conference on Records in Salt Lake City. That conference opened the door to a massive interest in memory book design, and Christensen was invited to give seminars and teach classes to countless groups, including Brigham Young University's Campus Education Week and numerous church, civic and school groups. During the following 25 years, she lectured continually throughout the Intermountain West.

In addition to her many lectures, Marielen and her husband AJ authored and published the first how-to book on organizing and preserving family memories, called Keeping Memories Alive. Not only did they found the first scrapbook store in 1981 and later name it after this book in 1993, the Christensens began a mail-order division in the back of the building. The business grew very quickly by word of mouth and had to move its warehousing to a larger facility in 1994, and its shipping department to a larger one in 1998. During the fall of 1993, Keeping Memories Alive opened the first wholesale division in the scrapbook industry providing other stores with a source to purchase all of their scrapbook products at one place. This step helped move the industry forward as small scrapbook stores began opening up all over the country.

As scrapbooking became more well-known, people were searching for new, fresh ideas on how to preserve their own memories. As a result of many requests from customers, Marielen Christensen authored and published the first idea book for scrapbookers in March of 1995.In 1996, Keeping Memories Alive made history again, as they launched the world's first scrapbooking commercial website.

With the arrival of magazines devoted strictly to scrapbooking, the scrapbook industry experienced huge growth during the years 1996 to 1999. In January of 2000, Marielen was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award from Creating Keepsakes Magazine for paving the way for this industry.

Scrapbooking as a hobby has taken off in the recent years, possibly in part because of its first commercial website. Another reason may be the strong social network that scrapbooking can provide. It is now a multi-billion-dollar industry with a large number of companies creating scrapbooking products. Across the world, "scrappers" or "scrapbookers" get together and scrapbook at each other's homes, local scrapbook stores, scrapbooking conventions, retreat centers, and even on cruises. Scrappers share tips and ideas as well as enjoying a social outlet. The term "crop," a reference to cropping, or trimming, printed photographs, was coined to describe these events. This hobby has surpassed golf in popularity: one in four households has someone playing golf; one in three has someone involved in scrapbooking.

In the late 1990's, many scrappers opened stores to turn their hobby into a business. Unfortunately, within approximately 5 years, many of those stores were forced to close due to a downturn in the economy and the fact that many store owners mistakenly assumed that loving to scrap was enough to run a retail store. Many owners simply didn't know HOW to run their stores. During this time, more multi-level direct sales companies were formed. Several were closed due to mismanagement, while others weathered the tough times. It also gave rise to a new breed of business - the home-based retailer. Companies arrived to provide information for women who wanted to break out of the direct sales mold and go out on their own. While vendors had traditionally stayed away from the home-based market due to fraud, they began to warm to the idea of the non-traditional sales channels as a way to get their products in front of more consumers through home parties and workshops.

Working with a company like this enabled them to tap into legitimate home-based retailers. Originally, it was hard to find scrapbooking supplies, but now most major discount stores and almost all major craft supply stores stock them. Local scrapbook stores (hereafter referred to as LSSs) are considered the heart and soul of the hobby of scrapbooking by some enthusiasts. LSSs are where one can attend classes and find out where the best "crops" are. Supplies can also be ordered online or ordered from a home-based retailer. Some of these sell products through a multi-level direct sales company while others are independent and may be part of a business group. Many local suppliers offer instructional classes. Scrapbooking is not only a hobby to create a place for one's keepsakes, but also has become a popular way to make gifts for weddings and other special occasions.
